Adult Education Class Begins Sunday, October 3, 2010:
When we say, "Yes" to Jesus, we are saying we will follow him wherever He leads for the rest of time. As Eugene Peterson noted, it's a long obedience in the same direction.
There are those who give the impression that we say "Yes" to Jesus and we're all set. One is left with the impression that the next meaningful step will be the welcome into the new heaven and the new earth. We can go on pretty much as we did before; maybe a little more honest, maybe helping out at church.
We don't find that notion in the Bible. Jesus calls people to be His disciples, His followers. Wherever He goes, His disciples go. Whatever He does, they do.
Where is Jesus going? What is He doing? How do we find out? This is why Bible studies, prayer, worship, and service are so important in the Christian life. It's also why I am so passionate and committed to lifelong learning as a Christian. We can never be satisfied with the child-level answers to life's questions. We live out there in the real world and we know that it's far messier than that.
The adult Sunday School classes are meant to help us to see Jesus; where He is going, what He is doing. The format and the topics vary widely. Sometimes it's a video series with discussion. Other times it's a study of a book of the Bible. Yet other times it is a study of a topic such as the early Church or other 'brands' of Christianity. Through it all, the idea is to learn how to follow Christ. We never do become independent workers. We're always disciples.
Our class will resume on October 3. We meet in the Youth Room from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon. Childcare is provided. Decide this year to be a part of the discussion. If you would like to be involved in assisting or in leading the group, ideas are most welcome. Our first topic of the autumn will be announced in the bulletin and in the next newsletter.
Peace,
Craig Repp
